How is hip replacement performed?

Hip replacement removes the damaged femoral head and worn socket cartilage and replaces them with a durable artificial implant made of metal, ceramic and high-density polyethylene components. The surgery is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia and usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes.

The surgeon selects an approach — such as posterior, anterior or lateral — based on the patient’s anatomy and surgical history. Each approach aims to restore natural hip mechanics while protecting the surrounding muscles as much as possible.

Who benefits from hip replacement?

Hip replacement is generally considered for patients with advanced hip osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis or hip fractures who continue to experience significant pain and limited mobility despite non-surgical treatment.

  • Persistent groin, hip or thigh pain that limits daily activities

What does recovery look like?

Most patients begin walking with a frame or crutches within a day of surgery, guided by a physiotherapist. Hospital stays are typically 1–3 days. Early recovery focuses on safe movement, wound care and gradually increasing activity.
