How is knee replacement surgery performed?

Knee replacement surgery is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia and usually takes 45–90 minutes. During the procedure, damaged bone and cartilage in the knee joint are carefully removed and replaced with artificial joint parts, typically made of durable metal alloys and high-density polyethylene.

Correct placement of the prosthesis is essential so the patient can move normally and with less pain afterward. Alongside conventional technique, robotic-assisted surgery may also be used to help guide bone cuts and implant placement with added precision.

Who is a good candidate for knee replacement?

Candidates are usually patients with advanced osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis who have not benefited from non-surgical treatment and continue to experience severe pain and limited movement.

What happens in the first days after surgery?

The first 1–3 days are spent in hospital. Patients practice walking, sitting, standing and managing stairs under a physiotherapist’s guidance. Bruising and swelling are normal and ease over time. Most patients need about 6–8 weeks — with consistent medication, exercise and follow-up — before returning to daily activities with less pain and better mobility.
